Menden is located in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia and boasts a long history dating back to 1072. Originally contested between various ruling areas, Menden developed into a fortified town with medieval city walls and defensive towers, remnants of which can still be seen today. Economically shaped by the metal, electrical, and lighting industries, Menden is also known as the "Hönnestadt" due to its location on the Hönne river. The town experienced destruction throughout the centuries from feuds, fires, and wars, but was always rebuilt and has remained in its current form since 1975. Wikipedia
