Okinawa City is the second-largest in Okinawa Prefecture, located 20km north of Naha. Historically divided into agricultural districts, it dramatically transformed after WWII with the establishment of US refugee camps and military bases, becoming a key “base city.” Known for the 1970 Koza Riot – a symbol of Okinawan resistance to US occupation – today it blends Japanese and American influences, particularly along Route 330 with bilingual signage and shops catering to military personnel.
