The Sierra Madre Occidental is a vast mountain range stretching across western Mexico, part of the larger American Cordillera. Known as the “Western Mother Mountain Range,” it’s a high volcanic plateau deeply carved by canyons like the spectacular Copper Canyon—larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. This range is crucial for the region’s water supply, capturing rainfall and feeding rivers used for irrigation, though dam construction raises environmental concerns. Historically home to indigenous groups, the area now features agriculture and forestry, alongside small settlements and unique biodiversity, including extensive oak forests. Travel can be challenging due to limited paved roads, but the dramatic landscapes and rich cultural history make it a compelling destination. Wikipedia
