Zug is the capital of the Canton of Zug in Central Switzerland, located 23 km south of Zürich on Lake Zug (Zugersee). The city encompasses areas along the lake shore, the Lorzenebene plain, and the Zugerberg mountain, and is historically marked by fishing – the name derives from the Old High German word for fishnets. Founded in the 13th century, Zug became part of the Swiss Confederation in 1352.
