The Loess Plateau in north-central China is a vast, unique landscape formed by centuries of wind-blown silt deposited southeast of the Gobi Desert. Covering 635,000 km² and home to 108 million people, the plateau is characterized by its distinctive loess landforms – platforms, ridges and hills – sculpted by erosion. It’s a significant geological site, recording past climates, but faces environmental challenges including erosion and changing rainfall patterns, prompting efforts toward sustainable management. The plateau's landscape transitions from rocky mountains to alluvial plains and river valleys, with notable features like Mahan Mountain and the Mu Us Desert bordering its northwest edge.
